Return on Investment Calculation:
How do I determine if my direct mail campaign was a success?
Response rate alone does not tell you whether a mailing list was successful. What matters is, did you make money? You need to look at the return on your investment in the mailing.
Here is a simple example:
Assume average profit or donation from one completed transaction is = $400
Cost of the Mailing is $0.50 per piece for 3,600 pieces (includes printing, postage & mailing service) = $1800 + $250 for the mailing list, for a Total of = $2,050
Assume you get a 0.5% response rate or 18 inquiries per mailing.
Assume you close half of these 18 hot leads or inquiries and win 9 new clients or supporters.
Assume you mail the the same list 5 times.
Total profit or donations from new customers or supporters = $400 * 9 customers * 5 campaigns = $18,000
Your cost of each mailing, after the first one, goes down to $1,800 from $2,050 per mailing as the list cost of $250 is a one-time cost.
Your total cost of 5 mailings = ((list price)+(printing & postage*5)) = $9,250
Your net profit or donations = $8,750
Your return on investment is = $18,000 / $9,250 or 2 times.
Was this mailing a success? You would probably say, "Yes" since you doubled your money. That is better than most stocks perform!
What is more, the lifetime value of each new customer or supporter has not been taken into account in this example.
